The Manhole Museum
Manholes covers have always been an obsession of mine. I think the best art is the one that hides in plane sight. These covers include artistic designs and historical patterns each carrying a story of city's evolution. How do we highlight something that often goes unlooked? The lack of exposure behind this "urban artwork" prevents it from the recognition it truly deserves. So I created a museum focused on public awareness and appreciation of the Manhole.

Each Manhole is unique in its own way. After much research I was inspired by the amount of diversity of the Manholes. Each one had a story tell if anyone was willing to listen.
My vision was to create a logo with modern minimalism and weathered textures. My logo features a simple representation of a Manhole cover. A circular shape with a Stretch-out pattern commonly associated with urban infrastructure.
Alternative Gothic No2, with its modern and assertive appearance, is highly versatile for our design contexts.
Lato's readability ensures that our messages and exhibit descriptions are clear and inviting, encouraging exploration and discovery.
Due to the bold and robust nature of the Manholes, I chose to keep it simple in my own designs. The color palette is inspired by the urban landscape, featuring tones of Slate Blue, Olive Green, and Rust Orange, reminiscent of weathered manhole covers and asphalt surfaces.
The concept for Manhole Coasters was created from wanting to bridge the gap between our brand and functionality. Coasters are crafted to replicate either our logo or real man hole covers from cities around the world.
I wanted to incorporate printmaking into my take-away concept. The tactile and age-old practice resonates the essence of manhole covers. For this process we roll paint over the designs and patterns found on manhole covers. We place a fabric item on top of the painted surface. Then, we apply some pressure to transfer the design. This transfer process captures the textures and details of the original design. This allows our participants to take home a shirt or bag with a piece of unique urban art.
